The Graduating Class of The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Program at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) were required to create a Garment inspired by World Renown Fashion Designer Vivienne Westwood. The Project was to be completed by the end of the Fall 2009 semester. A select number of pieces were available for display and I was there opening night to take it all in!
Vivienne Westwood is a British designer who is often credited for being the creator of "Punk Fashions." Westwood started her career in fashion in the early 70's with guidance of Malcolm McLaren (the man behind the punk rock group The Sex Pistols). She reflected the turmoil of those rebellious times. She was responsible for mirroring and outfitting the social movements characterized by the growing segments of British population known as the Teddy Boys, Rockers, and, finally, the Punks.
Vivienne Westwood is vastly known for her usage of Bold Plaid prints, Silk Taffeta, and abundance of Tulle.
In 2008's Blockbuster Movie "Sex and the City" she was the mastermind behind the breathe taking wedding gown that the main character Carrie Bradshaw (Played by Sarah Jessica Parker) wore to her wedding.
My Personal Favorite is this gown which embodies Westwood's Punk edge, and utilizes her signature material (Silk Taffeta) and still embraces the Women's silhouette. Its by an Up and Coming designer, and soon to be alum of F.I.T. Joshua Myrie (Follow him on twitter @HouseOfLexicon)
The Exhibit is open to the pubic through Sunday, December 6th from 9am to 9 pm, in the John E. Reeves Great Hall on the Campus of F.I.T., which is located on the corner of 27th St. and 7th Ave in New York City
